Loner is a machine that lives in a box and cherishes his moments of loneliness. Whenever someone tries to approach its personal space, he defends his privacy by stretching out its nearest arm and therefore dismisses the intruder. This project was developped as part of an assignment to study the interactive machines of Jean Tinguely and more particularly how their characteristics could be put into practice in today’s world and given current technology. With that in mind, we were lead to produce this DIY robot which interacts with its environment making use of the ARDUINO platform.
The conceptual genesis of Loner is basically a twist of an idea born in MIT back in 1952 by Marvin Minsk which later became popular as a “leave me alone” box. Those machines, are usually nothing more than a box executing again and again one single command, to turn itself off.

Our goal was to upgrade this idea to achieve a larger spectrum of interaction where the box can open from either of its four sides whenever the motion sensors detect any sign of movement in their range. In that way, the box now becomes a weapon in the hands of its resident and the interest is now directed towards that which lives inside the box rather than the box itself. As for the construction part, the machine is made entirely out of plexiglass and is set in motion with the assistance of 8 servo motors, and 4 distance sensors.  The box is made out of wood and has 4 semitransparent panels as doors further enhancing this game of hide and seek Loner likes to play with its surroundings.
