The work consists in the development of an urban project in Oporto in one defined area that combines river and sea, rugged and flat topography, historical and recent fragments of the city.

Our concept of city has lead us to indentify  real problems that were expressed in a summary characterization of the territory. This provided the necessary knowledge to develop an intervention strategy that aims to regenerate this sector by increasing the connection with the surrounding areas and giving it a new strength.

This strategy results in a synthesis map that combines three ways of intervention (intervening): objects, actions and means. It was developed in group and it defined the program of each sector. In order to accomplish it, the project was divided in five Project Operating Units (POU) that were developed by five students.

1) University Campus Unity

The first POU refers to the University Campus of Campo Alegre. The aim of this intervention is to reinforce the relation between the main street with the Campus, as well as to improve the mobility system of this area.

To reach our proposal we thought the university campus as whole and designed a new concept for it, that promotes a new “face” to the city with new functions, new buildings and better public spaces.

2) Ouro Valley Improvement

The second POU refers to the Ouro Valley. Although the exceptional territorial characteristics of this place, the degradation of the public and private spaces, the social problems and the lack of links (concerning function, streets, interests, etc) with the rest of the city results in the social exclusion of this area.

Therefore, the aim of the intervention is to emphasize the relation between this problematic area with the main street and the River Douro, thus opening it to the city and promoting a new public park to provide a new atmosphere. This idea requires also a relocation of the inhabitants in order to transform the social life condition.

3) Grijó´s Interchange

The third POU is Grijó’s Street and its connection with the highway interchange. The main goal is to develop this important street by giving it a proper scale, establishing attraction points and increasing its connection between two of the most important axes of the city.

In order to accomplish it, it’s necessary to redesign the highway interchange and to adjust the city blocks. It’s also important to consider a small river that has been forgotten and mistreated, enhancing it as a natural resource of public interest.

4) Pasteleira´s Progress

The fourth POU refers to the Pasteleira. The undefined urban structure and the lack of public interest functions are the main issues of this place. Despite its malfunctions, it consists in a strategic area that links important city parts.

The intervention seeks to duplicate the main axis in order to increase the embraced area, generating a special central space between it that improves the public use of this zone. To accomplish that, the project takes advantage of an existing public park, which is reorganized, and creates a new industrial and business center. The whole intervention is unified through the treatment of the public space.

5) D. Pedro IV Avenue

The fifth POU refers to an uncharacteristic area currently without a clear identity, completely disconnected from the city, even though it has the potential to be an important area to an eventual connection between Oporto and Matosinhos.

The project takes advantage of that opportunity to create a new important business center through the establishment of a new vital axis, that defines a clear urban structure and aims to be an exceptional public space that combines leisure, mobility, commerce and housing.
